When you play a level such as this one, you are reminded that it has been too long since id Software has released a single player game. pjw even includes a story line for this bizarre looking arena. The textures in the outside of the map can even be painful at times, so players are happy to stay in the inner areas that host a regeneration pool and the Red Armor. The architecture of the level is interesting as it provides visual effect in some areas and CPMA trick jumps in others. The connectivity is generally good, but the winding paths slow down the game considerably, a style more typical of single player maps. The items are distributed reasonably well, but the regen pool kills the tourney playability of the map. The bots do okay.

The FFA is different in a good way, but it does not make for a lasting Deathmatch experience. Try the level for a while...

This map looks like it takes place on planet Venus-seeing how close the sun is to the planet.

Since we are talking about distant planet maps, someone should do a map taking place on Titan (moon of Saturn)

I like this map a lot, the alien take on the graphics looks great and deserves respect, since there is a large lack of such bizzare maps in the Q3 community. The gameplay is pretty neat as well - this map has it all.

Heh. Funny you should say. I'm now working on the SP portion of the upcoming RTCW expansion . . .

pjw, I do hope you map some for upcoming SP games...many of your maps (this one included) suggest you'd be an ace SP mapper. Hot n' Moist, and Harder than Hate (quite good) are both fun MP maps...this one is not really good for 1v1 though.

That's the way it always is. Idiots!

Funny thing, when it happened to me at Spankenstein's or wherever, I asked them about the zero votes, and the answer was that the map deserverd less. I don't think these same idiots understand the map creation process.

Well, when i voted, this map had a 4.5 after 2 votes. Since sux0r gave it a 9, the other vote was clearly a 0. Either someone has it in for you, or it was an error. In either case, asking them to explain a low score is sorta pointless :P I woudlnt take low scores too seriously, unless they come with negative comments. The comments section is where you learn what people really think of your map.

Just to make it really clear, while I appreciate the good intentions and the votes, it really isn't the score that I care about as much, it's the not knowing why that bothers me about the zeros and ones and such. :)

I would actually rather have someone say "this map sucks" if they honestly feel that way--I could at least respond with "why?", and maybe even get some sort of reasoned response . . . eh . . . or not. :)

/me goes back to mapping.

well, it does seem like you've been getting the screwjob on you recent maps w/ votes. Of course thats better than people coming in here and saying "this map sucks" like I've had for a few of my maps. :)

But still, here's a 9 for ya...

me secretly gives pjw a 0 because I have something personal about him

:D

I wouldn't worry about some fools messing up the scores that much pjw. You always get morons voting/trolling on any sort of public site where it is possible to annoy people with no fear of reprecussions. People will even the score up anyways over time (I always vote several times if a map is getting scores it doesn't deserve). Well the score is up to 5.86 now anyways so I guess sensible votes are starting already :p. It's certainly not worth letting a couple of *insert appropriate insult* get you down anyways, keep 'em coming :D. Cyoz!

Thanks guys, I'm glad you liked it, or at least bits of it :)--and yes, it is an aquired taste, and will certainly not please everyone. :)

That being the case, can I go off on a little bit of a rant here? I'm not sure who I managed to piss off, but it seems like every time I get a map reviewed, I get a couple of positive comments and decent scores (like StormShadow's and <SuX0r>'s), and then someone immediately decides they're going to !@#$ up the score.

Right now I have "4.75 after 4 votes", which means, with the two people mentioned previously, I got two votes of a "1" and a "2" (or perhaps a "0" and a "3"). Now my point is not that I particularly give a crap about the score (it feeds my ego a little, I'm human, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it). The point is that I seem to get some very low scores every time and the voters NEVER SAY ANYTHING.

To whoever gave those two low votes, I'd like to hear from you regarding why. If you honestly think the map sucks, I may not agree with you, but I'm certainly interested in your opinion, and I'm always trying to improve. If it's something personal OTOH (which I suspect), please either learn some maturity or die of bowel cancer. KTHXBYE.

Very interesting map. I dont really like the texturing or the atmosphere (purple and yellow! eew!) but i think the map is quite well put together. It actually won the 'master mapping competition' on q3w over some really extraordinary maps.

The brushwork is quite good, the layout is pretty good for ffa (flow is a bit too constrictive for 1v1 imo) and the looks are.. well.. subjective :) Neat map. 7/10

I downloaded this map ages ago from the authors website and it's still cool now. I didn't find the textures THAT offputting, I like purple thought so that could be just me :p. Anyways; good scope for funky jumping, decent item placement and an original theme. Nice work again from pjw :). Like the rare bfg spawn on the quad as well, not that I'm a bfg whore or anything but I feel you can justify using it if it comes up instead of quad (still on 2 minute spawn) and it can make for a bit of variety in ffa games. 9 from me as the long windy corridors can slow things down at times.
