A medium sized release from ShadoW, suitable for 5 to 8 player DM or Team DM matches. Visually interesting architecture, theme and atmosphere - all of which suit the map's title. While the connectivity and lighting are both good, they are not as solid as other aspects of the map.

This is all in comparison to ShadoW's other recent maps, such as Battlegrounds, Rotten soul and The Dreadful Place.

Do not get me wrong, this is a very solid release that will lead to many hours of great DM and Team DM action! It just felt like ShadoW, the Master Craftsman of maps was distracted for a moment when putting this one together.

The inclusion of billboard ads, all of which look visually terrible, clash completely with the otherwise gorgeous theme and textures. This juxtaposition of commercialism and a holy site (Sanctum) really destroys the immersion level of the game. The ads were a requirement for the Maverick Mapping Competition #3, however there is no reason why this release needed to include them. The ads are also not well integrated to into the environment, they are simply boldly placed on the walls. And the icing on the cake, most, if not all of the ads look like they where put together by a first-year design student, something ShadoW had no control over. If the map requires ads (and you are not going to remove them), then the theme needs to incorporate the ads. Do not just stick them in the map.

Gameplay wise, the release is very strong but occasionally feels a little disconnected. Ideally, a second, non-competition plastered release would have looked better and been more immersive.

A good map, but imho I personally think Battlegrounds / Wargrounds was a more solid map than this. The aesthetics are a little cleaner here (but that may be just the minimal style that was sought here) but q3shw26 was more fun, with curved accel pads and vertical action seemed better as well. This is still an excellent map, as to be expected from Mr. Chrapka.

@ cityy - lol. with respect to the idea of another review i shall offer this... this map would have to be the MOST PRECISE TDM i have EVER seen. It is pure textbook and if people are interested in mapping for TDM then this is perhaps THE gold standard for people wanting to learn the absolute importance of level design and item placement for the purposes of gameplay. On the downside its construction means it will be a bit chuggy on older machines and because it is SOOOOO ridiculously perfect some people may find gameplay a little bit too transparent but on the plus side it is so well structured that it embodies the notion of balance for TDM. This means that a win on this map will be based PURELY on team skill and co-ordination rather than being a reflection upon spawning and an exposition of layout. Visually (aside from the sponsors plugs) it is classy and sophisticated. In this respect it is just simply gorgeous! ps: i can't believe i just used the word gorgeous... or maybe i can : ) ... i'm just that kinda guy

I agree with the reviewer (whoever it was - I guess it was Tig?) about the ads. Slapping ad banners in a work of art such as this map, Solitude, Windsong Keep etc. is like bastardizing the Mona Lisa with a Coca Cola advert. At least if they looked like billboards of sorts and not some flat vector graphics they might fit into their respective environments better.

But then I also agree with cityy about the review - there's far more to the map than just the ad banners.

Architecture looks absolutely great. Haven't fired up Q3 in quite a while but I'll give this one and "Achromatic" by flipout a try, that's for sure.

I'm pretty disappointed by the review. It doesn't tell you anything about the maps construction and gameplay. Instead it is just whining about the ads..
